Safety is key to a good experience at Macalester, and we want to make sure you are safe and happy at Macalester both on and off campus, and to give you the tools to ensure your own safety.
Campus Security are your go-to if you need help on campus. They are available 24 hours a day,, and are trained to assist in the case of an emergency, or if you need to report criminal/suspicious activity. You can always reach them by dialing 6555 from a campus phone, or calling them from 651-696-6555 (save it in your phone!).
Beyond Campus Security is the Saint Paul Police department, who patrol surrounding neighborhoods. To reach them from an on-campus phone, dial 9-911 (the first 9 is to dial an off-campus number). Saint Paul fire has a station just a few blocks from Mac, and they respond to medical emergencies and fire safety.
The Macalester College EMS (MCEMS) is a crew of students who have completed medical first responder training and who are Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). MCEMS is on call from 6pm-2am Fridays and Saturdays (except breaks), and is equipped to provide basic life support until care is transferred. Call Security and they will dispatch MCEMS.
Locked out of your room? If it’s during the day (8am-7pm), visit your hall office! If the office isn’t open, then call Campus Security at 651-696-6555. At night, call the RA-On-Call for your building (below is the list of duty numbers)

SAFEwalk Service is there to walk you home late at night if you feel unsafe walking alone. They provide escort service to staff, students, and faculty within a mile of campus. You can find them on the 2nd floor of the CC, every day of the week from 9pm to 1am, Reach them by calling 651-696-6699, or by calling Security and asking for SAFEwalk! These students wear orange and blue (or bright vests in the winter).
MacAlert is a text messaging system that notifies you of important emergency information requiring immediate action. You can sign up for this under the Campus Resources Tab on 1600Grand.
Macalester's Sexual Violence Prevention and Support website offers important resources for students who need more information about consent, sexual violence, or who might need to seek assistance after experiencing sexual violence or misconduct.
While we hope that everyone has healthy relationships, we want to make sure you know where to go for help. AT MAC AND IN OUT COMMUNITY!
- The Loch—find the student lounge in the basement of the CC: video games, pool, booths a stage for karaoke, and the Nessie’s pizza and ice cream bar.
- The College Events Calendar —find events here to make sure you know when and where things are happening! Grandview Movie Theater —1830 Grand Ave (.5 miles west of campus), which has new movies just moments from your doorstep.
- Looking for study spaces/hang out spots: we’ve got Tea Garden at 1692 Grand Ave, Dunn Bros Coffee, which has live music every night, and is at 1569 Grand Avenue, and Caribou Coffee at 68 Snelling Ave S.
- The Mississippi Riverfront—1.5 miles west on Grand or Summit from Mac’s campus, Walk, run, or bike down to the riverfront and enjoy the parks and the view!
- Want to shop? Find one-of-a-kind or big name brands on Grand, Snelling, and Selby Avenues! (Don’t forget the fro yo!)
- Citypages —can’t figure out what to do in the Cities? Citypages has everything you need to know about what’s going on! (Or you could always ask Suresh in Campus Activities and Operations…) Or look stuff up on the Metromix website!
- Poetry Slams—want to expand your understanding of identity and individual experiences? The Cities have an incredibly active slam poetry scene, go out and attend some!
- Pedal Minnesota —an excellent resource for those of you craving the time in the outdoors: hop on your bike, get some friends, and explore the miles of trails in the Cities!
