“The education offered by Macalester faculty and staff is not something that happens to students, but a collaborative process necessitating active engagement by students.”
Statement on Student Learning Macalester College
The work of the undergraduate student is the accumulation and processing of information, the building of critical thinking skills, and appreciation of the processes surrounding us that most interest us. Artists, political scientists, chemists, etc. often find themselves building upon the masterful work of the thinkers and specialists who came before them. At Macalester, though we pride ourselves on academic excellence, it is recognized that an individual is not necessarily capable of academic success. Standing alone we are at our weakest.
This message will have information about the academic resources that can help you be successful, and excel academically. Take note, and use them!
THE REGISTRAR
Courses, registration, major and minor forms, add/drop slips, DegreeWorks, etc. are all within the Registrar’s sphere of responsibility. Questions and concerns about these processes, forms, functions, and sites can be directed here. It’s also always fun to stop by 77 Mac and visit with them. Friendly faces, not least of which include Jayne Niemi, the fabled Registrar and reader of names, will greet you and eagerly answer your questions.
Contact them at: registrar@macalester.edu or 651-696-6200
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Do you have questions about academic advisors, FYCs, and what advisors can do for you [http://www.macalester.edu/academicprograms/academicadvising/]? Then you might want to visit Academic programs on the second floor of Weyerhaeuser.
Contact them at: piatz@macalester.edu or 651-696-6036
THE MACALESTER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE (MAX) CENTER
Do you need help with writing, math, or science? Then you should head to the MAX Center on the first floor of Kagin Commons. They have drop-in slots, appointments, and all the tutors are your peers. They are an excellent resource and can help boost a lot of your work.
[Note: If you are looking for foreign language tutors, check with the individual departments of that language.]
Contact them at: max_center@macalester.edu or 651-696-6193
THE DEWITT WALLACE LIBRARY
The Library isn’t limited to just books. Here you can find reference librarians who can help you muddle through databases, refine your research, or help you acquire difficult sources you need to find. Need to use Interlibrary Loan? Consider going to their website: Macalester.edu/library. Of course, there are also computer labs and printing options on the 1st and Lower floors.
DISABILITY SERVICES
Students with physical, psychological, or cognitive disabilities (chronic or temporary) may require accommodations to ensure that they have equal opportunity to access academic and co-curricular experiences at Macalester. Students with disabilities may request accommodations for the classroom, food service or for participation in the overall college environment. Visit the Disability Services website for more information, or schedule an appointment to meet with Robin Hart Ruthenbeck, Assistant Dean of Students. Contact her at: rhartrut@macalester.edu, or 651-696-6874.
